As the Superintendent of Schools, it is a privilege to voice an official welcome to our visitors and to have the opportunity to spotlight a few of the school district's many accomplishments.
The Jeff Davis County School District is a Georgia Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) School District, celebrating its sixth consecutive year of meeting both state and federal requirements. We congratulate our schools - Jeff Davis Primary, Jeff Davis Elementary, Jeff Davis Middle, and Jeff Davis High - for this outstanding accomplishment and for making the list of AYP schools for 2009. The school system boasts a proud tradition of academic excellence where students, teachers, and administrators enjoy a rich history of striving for high academic standards. Jeff Davis Primary, Jeff Davis Elementary, and Jeff Davis High are all 2009 Title I Distinguished Schools. Jeff Davis High is a 2007 Platinum Award Winning School, and Jeff Davis Elementary is a 2007 National Learning-Focused School of Merit recipient; and Jeff Davis Primary and Jeff Davis Elementary are 2008 Learning-Focused Preferred Schools. The school district is also proud of its Ombudsman Program, a nationally recognized alternative education program. In addition, Jeff Davis Pre-K - our smallest Yellow Jackets - provides excellent preschool experiences for our youngest learners.
Behind great school systems are great people. Throughout the Jeff Davis County School System, one finds excellent employees who are committed, caring individuals. We hire only the best and invest in them through high quality professional development and training. From the early mornings to the late afternoons, the different staffs work tirelessly to make sure the time students spend with us is both meaningful and productive. In addition, system personnel are second to none in their dedication to their job responsibilities and to the care of students. I am honored to call all of these individuals my colleagues and my friends.
From the SPLOST vote to participation in yearly school events, our citizens pull together to do what is right for children. Through community support, two schools have been totally renovated, and the construction of the new Jeff Davis Middle School are currently underway. Jeff Davis County's parents attest to the strong bond that exists between our community and our school system. Business partnerships, parental involvement, and school-community interactions are at an all-time high, as we reach out to each other to provide the best education possible for students. Our community has high expectations for our school system. In turn, students are provided clean, safe schools that are accredited annually by both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Georgia Accrediting Commission.
Jeff Davis County is also the home of numerous award-winning band, athletic, vocational and other extra-curricular programs that complement our academic focus. Many student clubs and organizations are recognized at the regional, state, and national levels. These programs enjoy exceptionally high participation rates and provide students with lifelong skills that contribute to a well-balanced education.
