Welcome Back

Superintendent Message

2023-2024 School Year

Let me first begin by saying that it is an honor to serve in Jeff Davis County.  I am thankful for the opportunity to be in Jeff Davis serving alongside our 400+ employees and 3,000 students.  Our school district is one of the great points of light in our community and we look forward to continuing a standard of excellence as we prepare for the 2023-2024 school year.

Moving forward, we want everyone to know that we are committed to making student and staff safety a priority throughout the district. This summer, we sent a team from our district to the GEMA School Safety & Homeland Security Conference that included principals and central office personnel.  School safety is constantly evolving which requires districts to evaluate their protocols, procedures, and products frequently.  That being said, we will be implementing a new district-wide safety notification system for our schools called Centigex as well as upgrading our district radio system for our administrators.

Likewise, academic achievement among our students will always be a focus.  In keeping with our district vision of a “relentless pursuit of excellence as we prepare students for life”, school and district leaders worked diligently over the summer disaggregating student data that in return, will be reflected in 45-Day Action Plans at each of our schools.  In addition, we are excited about our new English and Language Arts textbook adoption for grades 6-12.  This change will streamline our efforts in the area of ELA with one consistent series from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

While we constantly look for areas to grow, it is important to recognize where we have grown.  We celebrate the academic gains last year in each of our schools while overcoming learning loss experienced from the pandemic.  This is a testament to the dedication of great teachers and instructional support staff at each of our schools.  In addition, district and school support personnel, along with staff members from such areas as transportation, school nutrition, maintenance, and our custodial departments, make it possible for the district to achieve our goals.  Victories do not happen in a vacuum and each member of the JDCSS family is necessary.  It is also through great partnerships with parents and other community stakeholders that our students succeed.

I look forward to this year where we fulfill our mission statement, “Developing successful, productive citizens who make a positive contribution to society.”  It is an honor to serve you, our students, and our community.

And as always...GO JACKETS!!!

Sincerely,

Dr. Chris Roppe
