Curriculum and Instruction

The Jeff Davis County School District understands the vital importance of a strong curriculum in driving learner success. We adhere to the Georgia Department of Education Instructional Materials and Recommendation Process (Rule 160-4-4-.10) to adopt resources that align with the Georgia Standards of Excellence.

For grades K-5, learners utilize the Into Reading Curriculum Series by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, while those in grades 6-12 use the Into Literature curriculum. These programs help learners master the Georgia Standards of Excellence in Reading and English Language Arts (ELA).

To enhance their Mathematics skills, K-5 learners use the Eureka Mathematics Curriculum by Great Minds. In grades 6-12, teachers create tailored units to help learners understand the Georgia Standards of Excellence in Mathematics. For Science, Social Studies, and elective courses, teachers develop their own instructional units aligned with state standards. Beyond the core curriculum, Jeff Davis County School District offers various courses in career, technology, and the arts. Learners in K-8 rotate through elective courses to explore career interests, while high school learners can take elective courses that align with their interests and/or lead to pathway completion.

We also use supplemental programs and materials to provide personalized instruction. Jeff Davis Primary will continue to use Lexia and iLearn for targeted instructional plans in reading and mathematics based on individual learner needs. Jeff Davis Elementary and Jeff Davis Middle will begin using i-Ready, a research-based program designed for learners from kindergarten through eighth grade. i-Ready Personalized Instruction creates individualized learning plans based on each learner's performance on the i-Ready Diagnostic test, supporting teachers in planning instruction, setting goals, and assessing learner progress to improve achievement.

Elementary and Middle School learners take the Beacon assessments, provided by the Georgia Department of Education, three times a year as benchmarks for ELA and Math. Additionally, the high school will begin using Beacon in its Algebra classes. All grade levels utilize common formative assessments to provide the best instruction possible for learners. The data from these assessments is analyzed by school and district leaders to develop actionable instructional plans every 45 days.

To ensure continuous improvement, all staff members participate in high-quality professional learning throughout the year. Teachers meet weekly for professional learning, data analysis, and lesson planning. Each school has a School Improvement Specialist who offers additional professional learning tailored to the specific needs of learners and teachers. Furthermore, all Jeff Davis County staff members will have the opportunity to participate in Science of Reading training next year to enhance their understanding of explicit literacy instruction in all schools.

For any concerns or inquiries, please contact Jason Kennedy, Curriculum and Professional Learning Director, at 912-699-7009 or via email at [email protected].ga.us.

The Jeff Davis County School District looks forward to another year of learning, achievement, and growth.

Professional Learning

Professional Learning is the means by which teachers, administrators, and other staff acquire, enhance, and refine the knowledge, skills, practices, and dispositions necessary to create and support high levels of learning for all students.

Professional learning, now more than ever, is a critical piece in the success of a school system. Through proven methods and collaboration we strive relentlessly to give the students of Jeff Davis County the best possible education.

“The most valuable resource that all teachers have is each other. Without collaboration our growth is limited to our own perspectives.” – Robert John Meehan
