Curriculum and Instruction

Jeff Davis County School district believes that student curriculum is vital in supporting learning success.  Curriculum is adopted in the district by following the Georgia Department of Education Instructional Materials and Recommendation Process (Rule 160-4-4-.10).  Students in K-5 use the Into Reading Curriculum Series by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and students in 6-12 use the Collections Reading Series by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt  to aid in learning the Georgia Standards of Excellence in Reading and English Language Arts (ELA).  Students in K-5 use the Eureka Mathematics Curriculum by Great Minds and students in 6-12 use teacher written units to aid in learning the Georgia Standards of Excellence in Mathematics.  Teacher made units are used to support instruction of the standards in Science, Social Studies, and extra-curricular courses.  In K-8, students are rotated through elective courses that allow them the opportunity to develop career interests. High school students have the opportunity to take elective courses that align to personal interests and/or that lead to pathway completion.

Supplemental programs and materials are used to help provide individualized instruction for students.  Lexia and iLearn help provide students and teachers with a prescriptive instructional plan of action based on student areas of opportunities for improvement in the areas of reading and mathematics.  Illuminate is used for common assessments, student progress checks, and benchmarks.  Students in Elementary and Middle School take the Beacon, provided through the Georgia Department of Education, three times per year as the benchmark for ELA and Math. Student data is analyzed by every school and district leaders through 45 day action plans to formulate instructional next steps.

All staff are provided high quality professional learning opportunities throughout the year.  Teachers meet weekly to collaborate, review data, and prepare lessons. All schools are staffed with a School Improvement Specialist to help support additional professional learning specific to student and teacher needs. Professional Learning

Professional Learning is the means by which teachers, administrators, and other staff acquire, enhance, and refine the knowledge, skills, practices, and dispositions necessary to create and support high levels of learning for all students.

Professional learning, now more than ever, is a critical piece in the success of a school system. Through proven methods and collaboration we strive relentlessly to give the students of Jeff Davis County the best possible education.

“The most valuable resource that all teachers have is each other. Without collaboration our growth is limited to our own perspectives.” – Robert John Meehan
